El Salvador Launches National Intellectual Property Strategy to Boost Economy

The Government of El Salvador has introduced a new National Intellectual Property Strategy (ENPI), aiming to create more opportunities for creatives, entrepreneurs, and business owners by protecting their ideas. This strategy, spearheaded by the Ministry of Economy and supported by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), seeks to stimulate economic growth by facilitating the commercialization of protected ideas and generating employment opportunities.

María Luisa Hayem, Minister of Economy, emphasized that the strategy sends a clear message to local and international investors about El Salvador’s commitment to intellectual property protection under President Nayib Bukele’s administration. According to Hayem, the core objective of the strategy is to promote creativity, innovation, and invention by leveraging intellectual property as a driving force for economic growth.

The initiative also enables the establishment of the National Intellectual Property Council, which will include representatives from various government sectors, such as the Ministries of Economy, Culture, Tourism, and Education, as well as the National Registration Center. The strategy was crafted in coordination with multiple public institutions and benefited from WIPO’s technical support.

In August, El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly approved the Intellectual Property Law, which aims to safeguard innovation and creativity while encouraging the dissemination of information, knowledge, technology, culture, and the arts.

United States Ambassador to El Salvador, William Duncan, praised the Salvadoran government for this significant step, acknowledging the strategy’s potential to foster innovation, protect intellectual property rights, and promote economic growth.
